Bishan Ang Mo Kio Park Pond Gardens and Playground - Nature with Kids

Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park is one of the largest parks in Singapore, with an area of 62-hectare. It has been said that sightings of wild-life, particularly wild otters and monitor lizards, are common here. Of course, spotting these wild animals are not guaranteed, but we decided to try our luck anyway.

Armed with this map that we printed off the Internet, we decided to explore the west side of the park known as the Pond Gardens.

Shaded by dense greenery, the well-maintained tracks are ideal for jogging and cycling, or simply a leisurely stroll with the kids.

We walked along the river banks, which were surrounded with colourful flowers and foliage. It was indeed peaceful and picturesque!

We saw some families with their buckets and nets, doing some longkang fishing too. Great idea for when we come back the next time!

Nature lovers will enjoy this park as the lush greenery and unique waterways provide a wide array of interesting flora and fauna.

We continued walking on the tree-lined roads, heading towards... THE PLAYGROUNDS!

The huge Adventure Playground definitely didn't disappoint! It has all sorts of climbing structures, various slides, ropes, and rock climbing walls.

The boys needed no invitation to try everything out.

I was especially intrigued by these climbing poles that I have not seen around. I encouraged the kids to climb as high as they could. It looked pretty easy.

But unfortunately they just couldn't get any higher than this!

My second son refused to give up though.

But that's about as far as he could go! Lol

The playground is a wonderful place for kids to learn social and life skills, not forgetting a chance to physically challenge their young bodies.

I loved how the big one was there to help push the little one up when it was too difficult for him.

And I absolutely loved this photo where the 2 older brothers were encouraging the little one to go higher, and how the little one was always looking up to them, always hanging on to every word they say.

Needless to say, it was with great difficulty getting the kids off the playground to check out one last place.

It was the charming Lotus Garden. We strolled along the bridge and spotted dozens of colourful dragonflies and water spiders in the pond. Quite fascinating!

Looking at the map, the Lotus Garden is almost at the end of the park so we decided to head back.

Our eyes were always on the lookout for animals hiding in the waters or the bushes, and we were properly rewarded when we spotted a monitor lizard hiding inside the bushes! It gaily crawled out when it heard the kids' noises.

Having walked quite a distance, we were all famished by this time. We decided to check out Grub, a bistro that we passed by earlier and looked to serve good food in a nice child-friendly ambience.

Although the service was a little hit and miss, probably because they were packed, we still thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the food was fantastic.

With large open spaces, wonderful walking tracks, grassy river banks, surrounded with beautiful nature, the Bishan Park is definitely a great place for families to have a fun weekend retreat.

Regrettably, we didn't spot any otters though. I was told the best time to spot them is early evening when they come out to look for food. So we would definitely try our luck in the evening next time!
