Cooking Activity with Kids - Sushi Making at Home

Meal times should be fun and enjoyable for the whole family. Sometimes I stress about what the kids are putting in their mouths, whether they are healthy or nutritious enough for their growing bodies. And I get really upset when they refuse the food I have laboriously prepared for them! I know I shouldn't take it personally and I'm trying to accept that they may take a while to like a certain new taste or texture.

But really, meal times should be enjoyed and stress-free. Sometimes it's great to just let go and let the kids have what they want, even when it's messy and may be not the healthiest option!

My kids love seaweed and sushi so much. I figured a sushi making activity would be a hit with them.

With minimal prep, I can get dinner on the table in 30 minutes - which is the time taken to cook the rice in my rice cooker :P

I prepare the kids' favourite like tuna mayonnaise, omelette, sweet corn, crabsticks, and seasoned seaweed sheets. I usually use TaoKaeNoi sheets as they make the sushi tastier.

Simply spread some rice on the seaweed sheet, add whatever topping you fancy and wrap the seaweed carefully around it. We've never bothered to wrap and roll neatly or even cutting them. I just let the kids stuff whatever they want and eat them like a "hand-roll" :)

The kids have lots of fun squeezing as much filling as they can into their sushi.

We found this Inari pack sold at Cold Storage and this proved to be a total game-changer as it brought the sushi making fun factor to a different level!

Simply stuff it with rice.

Then add topping.

The kids declared their sushi taste even better than restaurants' sushi! 😁

Sushi making is definitely a fun and interactive way of eating with kids. It is hassle-free and requires minimal prep. The kids are happy they get to choose, make and eat what they want.

You can change it up, experiment with the filling with whatever you love or have on hand. Some shredded chicken, sausages, cheese, avocados or vegetables like carrots and cucumbers would be fantastic too.

Most importantly, have fun and enjoy your time with the kids!
