Spicy Mala YuanYang Hotpot at Xinyi - Must Try BEST food in Taipei

Much has been said about the street food in Taiwan, but no trip to Taiwan is complete without trying their Mala hotpot.

Based on friends' recommendations, we went to Mala YuanYang Hotpot at Xinyi branch.

It was crowded when we were there at 4.30pm on a Saturday. They are open from 4pm for dinner so you may have better luck coming in earlier.

We were told the next available slot was at 10.30pm! And they were booked out the next day too. We had no choice but to take up the 10.30pm slot as this was on my MUST TRY list.

And am I glad we had it!!

For NT$635+, we got unlimited amount of premium quality beef, seafood, handmade meat balls, dumplings and much more, cooked in a rich, spicy and distinctive mala broth.

Plus, Movenpick and HAAGEN-DAZS ice cream.

And not forgetting, free flow of WINE and BEER!

Now let's start with the soup base... You can choose 2 soup bases from a choice of 5. I would definitely recommend the mala spicy soup plus a milder clear soup.

The mala soup was truly amazing! It was hot, savoury, spicy and incredibly flavoursome.

With any hotpot, the highlights are the meat! At YuanYang, they serve great quality American, Australian and New Zealand beef, pork, lamb and chicken in various cuts.

American short ribs beef was our favourite.

There is fresh seafood including fish, oysters, crabs, scallops, mussels, clams, shrimps and more.

Fish balls with roe filling, shrimp balls, crab sticks, various hand made dumplings.

Do not miss the handmade fish and shrimp paste too. They are deliciously unique!

We also enjoyed the intestines and tendons. They taste incredible when cooked in the spicy broth!

We saw other diners putting these You Tiao (fried dough fritters) inside the mala soup and followed suit. The You Tiao soaked up the rich mala broth - so unhealthy but satisfyingly delicious!

There are also many varieties of vegetables, mushrooms, and noodles.

As we enjoyed these delicious hot food cooked to our hearts' desires, we sipped on free flow of wine and Taiwanese beer.

The milk tea was wonderful too - very rich and sweet.

But we had to save some stomach space for DESSERT!

I sure wasn't disappointed with the selection.

Cakes, puddings and fresh fruits.

Movenpick ice cream.

And an impressive 16 flavours of Haagen-Dazs ice cream!

To end off, there is coffee and tea as well.

All of these, for just NT$635 (+10% cleaning fee) - that is only SG$35!

Definitely WORTH IT! 😋😋

And we all agreed it was the BEST meal we had in Taipei!
